O'Grady's father was Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. The family was raised by her parents in Wheaton (Illinois) where she was a graduate of the North High School in Wheaton. In commercials, she appeared prior to moving from Wheaton, Illinois, to Los Angeles. Her career started as an actress in commercials and models for Montgomery Ward. She had her debut on the big screen in the 1988 romantic comedy she's Having a Baby, and she was later cast in the recurring role of ABC Drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. Alongside guest-starring on other shows and appearing in independent and TV-produced films, she also appeared as the main character in several television shows. Her first major role was as Donna Abandando on the ABC Police show NYPD Blue. Her role as the tall and blonde squad secretary was played from 1993-96. For each of those years she won the Emmy Award in the category for Outstanding Supporting Performance by a Drama Series. In 1995, O'Grady won Screen Actors Guild Award Outstanding Ensemble Performance in Drama Series along with the cast.
